05 Feb The New Reality of Face Masks vs. Your Skin
Wearing or not wearing a face mask, such as an N95 particulate respirator, is really not an option nowadays. All public health professionals agree, N95 masks and other face masks are among the best weapons in the fight against Covid-19.
Unfortunately, some people experience irritation, inflammations, rashes and breakouts during extended wear of face masks, including some N95 respirators. What can you do to make your skin look and feel healthy while protecting your health with masks?
Simple Solutions for Your Skin
The skin on your face is more sensitive than skin on other parts of your body, and it reacts unpredictably to different materials. Different skin types react in their own way, so proper skin care routine is important in managing negative skin responses.
Pay attention to:
- Cleansing: It’s important to wear minimal makeup and clean your skin throughout the day, if you wear your N95 mask for long periods of time. Use toners and molecular water if you can’t wash your face. Toner will clean your skin, hydrate it, and possibly nourish, depending on the brand you use. If your skin tends to be dry, avoid hot water while washing your face. If your skin is on the oily side, warmer water can benefit it by washing off extra oil that can cause breakouts.
- Moisturizing: No matter what your skin type is—oily or dry—moisturizing is important. Kelly Dougher, a 24-year-old beauty and style writer based on the East Coast, suggests getting a moisturizer with glycerin, hyaluronic acid, or high-quality oils such as argan or avocado. They help lock in moisture. Specialty serums are also often packed with high-potency ingredients to restore necessary nutrients such as antioxidants and collagen.
- Healing breakouts: If breakouts happen, use a good toner after cleansing your skin and then you can use a clay mask for an even deeper clean. Always check the ingredients in a mask to make sure they benefit your particular skin type.
Having a good skin care strategy will minimize the negative impacts of wearing masks. Stay healthy and stay beautiful while and after wearing your N95 mask. And, if you need additional particulate respirators, please contact us.
